What is your purpose in music?
What motivates you?
I still have to think about the
first
question for a long time ...
Anyway,
I really like working with my hands
and playing music opens up rooms in
my head that I wouldn’t otherwise
know. For me it’s an entrance to an
abstract world, sometimes with feelings
I can’t describe so well. What are your hobbies
and passions besides music? I run a lot. I’m also quite passionate about beautiful
or interesting objects, places, situations, ...Which other genres do you play
or listen to and how do you incor-
porate them in your contemporary
music practice? I like all interesting music, but of course
that’s a vague answer. Some classical
music I listen to quite fanatically, but I also
like the high, almost superhuman,
intensity level of some electronic music
such as house, breakcore, noise or metal. What is your most cherished
Nemø anecdote or memory?
I can’t choose well. I remember the
performance of Rosenhöhe Apollo
of Vladimir Gorlinsky in Darmstadt.
I remember crawling through the bushes
with speakers, scratching my legs on
brambles, hiding behind the trees of the
Park Rosenhöhe in Darmstadt, trying to
invisibly perform a sonic spatial effect for
the wandering listeners.

I also look back with a smile to one of
our first major concerts. We had far too
much repertoire on different locations in
the hall, it was all very difficult and so
many things went wrong logistically.
However, I loved the good atmosphere
in the group, the ambition and naivety.
I hope we’re still a bit naive.Which book are you taking
with you on a longer trip?
I still have these unfinished books next to
my bed:

-Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie: Americanah
(I recommend!)-Thomas Mann: Der Zauberberg-Michael Pye: Antwerp: the glory years-Cazzie David: No one asked for thisUnfotunately, I read at the pace of a snail.Tell us a secret that nobody knowsMaybe next time

What is your purpose in music?
What motivates you?
My purpose in music, is to show
that our lives are more than our
daily troubles

What are your hobbies
and passions besides music?

I have no other passion than music

Which other genres do you play
or listen to and how do you incor-
porate them in your contemporary
music practice?

I play with electronic and I compose
music that sits between classical music,
contemporary music, experimental
music and electronic music

What is your most cherished
Nemø anecdote or memory?

My best remembering with

Nemø

is the concert we did in Darmstadt
for Vladimir Gorlinsky

Which book are you taking
with you on a longer trip?

There are so many books to take
for a long trip : a Philip K Dick book,
a novel of Umberto Eco, a Zen book,
a book that analyses the work of a
composer, ....

Tell us a secret that nobody knows!
I don't have any secrets

	Instrument:
Viola, violin, keys,
tenor guitar and bass guitar.
And I LOVE singing haha.
Studies:
Ghent University
and School of Arts Ghent
Other projects:

I play in somes bands
and projects: Jan Verstraeten,
MOMOYO, Galine, Tourist LeMC,
Room13Orchestra, ...
I have a quartet: Ma'at,
and I make my own music
under the name BRICOLAAG.

What is your purpose in music?
What motivates you?

It's not so much a matter of having
a goal, but an intrinsic drive.
Playing music, being on stage or
in the studio: there is nothing in
my life I would rather be doing
and I would give up a lot to do that.

What are your hobbies
and passions besides music?

Reading, bouldering
and hiking/biking in nature.

Which other genres do you play
or listen to and how do you incor-
porate them in your contemporary
music practice?

I am a musical 'omnivore', but I mainly
play indie, pop and jazz besides
contemporary music. I think it's very
interesting and useful to approach
contemporary music in terms of groove,
song structures, playing together
as a band, ... things we associate more
with popular than classical contemporary.
Anyhow, I don't like to think too much in
labels. I think of music as a colurful
spectrum and I like to move through it
as freely as I can!

What is your most cherished
Nemø anecdote or memory?

That time during the first corona wave,
when we submitted a funding application
and we submitted it less than a minute
before the deadline. We were so far away
from each other behind our computer
screens but felt so released and happy
we made it, cheering and laughing so
hard that it felt for a moment that we
were all together.
(We didn't get the money, though...)

Which book are you taking
with you on a longer trip?

Proust: ‘à la recherche du temps perdu’
And all the other books on my night desk
waiting to be read :')

Tell us a secret that nobody knows!

Last month, it was 7 years since
I went to the dentist

bass guitar at different schools
and compose music for jazz quartet.
Currently I am in the process of
composing, recording and producing
my first album.

What is your purpose in music?
What motivates you?
Striving towards beauty and
mastering a craft is a nobel feat,
which I belief is a good hill to die on.
I write and play music for people I love.
To give them a gift and I want it to
be
the best as I possibly can manage.
I belief that a world with musical gifts
for others is a better world than a world
without them, even if it’s a very small gift
and for a very small audience. I belief
that to be true and it gives me direction.
What are your hobbies and
passions besides music?
As a hobby I take care of my body
via calisthenic sports and running.
I also take care of my thoughts and
language by writing essays to sharpen
and structure ideas and my ability to
communicate them. This feeds my
passion for researching and toying
around with different knowledge and
how our memory works. I like to do
learn and improve, hat is what drives me.
Which other genres do you play
or listen to and how do you incor-
porate them in your contemporary
music practice?
I tend towards playing jazz music
in a very broad way, but actually it is just music in general. Currently
I am studying Lester Young,
but I listen, study and play everything
that captures my interest in an intuitive
way. I transcribed: Michael Brecker,
Bob Reynolds, Charlie Parker,
Hank Mobley, Branford Marsalis,
Roy Hargrove, Louis Armstrong, Prince, John Mayer, Chris Potter,

Ludwig Van Beethoven,

Joshua Redman,
Dua Lipa, Jack White, The dead weather,
Beyoncé, Michael Jackson, Bruno Mars,
Jeff Buckley, Jimi Hendrix, and many
more in combinationwith my classical
education. I am very open. Music is music,
an organisation of sound, of frequencies,
yet it is extremely mysterious
and interesting.
It’s a celebration of
what we as a species are capable of.
It’s endless possibilities is mesmerising
and a gateway to very profound knowledge
about our experiences in and of life.

When you are writing an essay,
you connect different ideas and knowledge
you already have, and try to make sense
of new knowledge that you came across,
or you try to answer a question with
your knowledge. To me it is the same
with music, although not necessarily
with linguistic knowledge. You connect
new sounds to knowledge, artists, ideas
and experiences you already have.
The richer your knowledge is, the more
interesting your interpretations can become.
That is what I strive to bring to the table.
What is your most cherished
Nemø anecdote or memory?
There are too many memories
to decide and I cherish different memories
for different things. I cherish the wedding
of Freya. I cherish the meeting and
working together with Óscar Escudero
and Belenish Moreno-Gil in Berlin.
I cherish the Nemø-days.
Which book are you taking
with you on a longer trip?
I have a library of books on my phone.
I’ll bring my phone and take them all.
I read them all at the same time, get ideas
out of them and try to translate them
in my own words and connect them
with other ideas.
Tell us a secret that nobody knows.
No, if I hold secrets, which I don’t like
and are very few, I take them to the grave.
I don’t think holding secrets is a good idea.
I don’t think sharing secrets is a good idea,
especially in public.

Instrument: I’m a singer, soprano. I love playing the
piano but I am really bad at it. Next to this
I have some experience with playing diffe-
rent percussion instruments. My goal is to
play marimba or vibraphone with four sticks!
Studies: Royal Conservatory Ghent, but still studying
with different international teachers
(Paris & New York)Other projects:
I am one of the HYOID-singers: a vocal
ensemble for contemporary music. I am the
singer of Goggles duo, together with my dear
friend, amazing percussionist and Nemø-
partner Wim Pelgrims. Furthermore I work as
a freelancer for every interesting project that
comes my way.

What is your purpose in music?
What motivates you?
As a singer you get very quickly in touch
with the more theatrical side of music.
I would say that I am more of a ‘stage-
person’ than only a musician. I am
motivated by the stories I can tell through
music and playing different roles that are
sometimes very far from your daily life
or your own personality.
I love the fact
that through singing and music, I can be
just every person or object or animal,
I want!
What are your hobbies and
passions besides music?

I have been journaling since I was ten
years old. I have a whole library filled
with my notebooks. Whenever I have the
time,
I love to go somewhere, have a nice
coffee and put my thoughts about the
world, my life or really small and stupid
things on paper.
I also follow an amazing
Feldenkrais class and a contemporary
dance class.
Which other genres do you play or
listen to and how do you incorporate
them in your contemporary music
practice?

Maybe this should be a secret but
I don’t listen that much to music. I am
very fond of the silence at home.
And if I do listen to music, it varies from
reggaeton in the car in the South of France
to female jazz singers like Nina Simone
while cooking to horrible Greek pop music
when I’m at the beach with my Greek and
international friends in Athens to R&B from
the nineties during long car rides.
Next to this, for inspiration and to improve
myself, I listen a lot to classical singers
from Barbara Hannigan to Maria Callas to
Erin Morley or Angela Brower. I feel that
my music making or singing is also
influenced by the visual arts so I love to go
to art exhibitions and discover new (or old)
painters, designers, installation-artists or
performance artists.
What is your most cherished µNemø
anecdote or memory?

The trip to Berlin to meet Oscàr Escudero
& Belenish Moreno-Gil was very special.
We discovered some true allies in them
and
I cherish both of them as close friends.
Performing their Flat Time Trilogy was a
lifechanging experience. Next to that, more
generally speaking, I am very fond of the
happy chaos that Nemø sometimes is.
The fact that there are so many big,
adventurous and chaotic ideas is one of
the biggest strengths of the ensemble.
Which book are you taking
with
you on a longer trip?

For the moment I am obsessed with
Russian literature. I love the darkness
of it, the complexity of the characters,
the strange humor, ... . On a long trip,
I would for sure take a Dostojevski
I haven’t read yet.
Tell us a secret that nobody knows!
I always (always!) have to cry when I hear
the ritornello in the aria of La Musica in
Orfeo by Claudio Monteverdi. For me this
music is the symbol of exquisite beauty.
Maybe it’s a genetic thing because
my father has exactly the same reaction
when he hears this ritornello. But that’s
probably his secret to tell, sorry papa!

	Instruments:
clarinet and bass clarinet
Studies:
Royal conservatory of Ghent
Other projects:
The Royal Symphonic Band
of the Belgian GuidesEbano Clarinet Quartet
What is your purpose in music?
What motivates you?
The process and product. To see
and feel the change of a score.
The
process of an unknown score that
grows into a complete control of it.
And how everything falls into place
as we play it together.
What are your hobbies and
passions
besides music?
I like running and gardening
Which other genres do you play
or listen to and how do you incor-
porate them in your contemporary
music practice?
For me it’s important to maintain
technicalbasics such as sound exercises
and scales. Also I still regularly play
technical studies.We regularly play
marches at the Royal Bandof the Guides.
The cadence and the correct placement
of the rhythms within it are extremely
important. Besides the fact that these
marches have meaning within the military,
for me it is a training for perfecting
placement and stability. A technical
mastering and control of your instrument
will help you to apply the specific techniques
required within the contemporary repertoire.
Then add a big dose of my favourite band
System of a Down...I love that heavy music
with its passages, suddenly changing
atmospheres and surprising twists.
For me, the combination of the two is a metaphor of how I approach and practice
contemporary music.

What is your most cherished
Nemø anecdote or memory? Festival for new music, Darmstadt.
Sweating with a box under our arms,
misleading people.
Which book are you taking
with you on a longer trip?
I'm not a big reader, but a book that
left a big impression is Franny
and Zooey from J.D.Salinger.
Tell us a secret that nobody knows!
Then it wouldn't be a secret anymore ;-)
but i really love Tarzan

What is your purpose in music?
What motivates you? Music is no different from life itself,
it is life. Becoming a better musician is
becoming a better person, which can
only help creating a better world.
Learning from everyday experiences
and letting everything be music/harmony
is the key. The purpose of music is
understanding life. What are your hobbies and
passions besides music?
Running! I hope to do my first full
marathon in 2024.
Which other genres do you play
or listen to and how do you incor-
porate them in your contemporary
music practice?
I really don’t think in genres. I would
say I mostly listen to adventurous music,
that can be adventurous pop music, rock,
jazz ,… What is your most cherished
Nemø anecdote or memory? I think the very first concert I did with
Nemø

was in Poland, playing Alexander
Schubert, ‘Sugar, Maths and Whips’ and
I think a piece of Kuba.. I’ll never forget
that trip, being my first concert with

Nemø,
it was really special. Also hanging around
with everyone in Poland was super nice.
I remembered Tom Jackson subbed on
bass clarinet, it was a really nice group to
hang with.Which book are you taking
with you on a longer trip?
I’m reading Fernando Pessoa,
the book
of disquiet, right now. It’s perfect for longer
trips, you can’t read to much at once
because it takes some time to process the
deepness of the words he writes.Tell us a secret that nobody knows!
Every time I eat French fries, a little tear
pops up in my left eye…
