Automatic Means of Human Labour

Automatic Means of Human Labour

Hugo Morales’ ‘Automatic Means of Human Labour’ is a sounding reflection on the future of human labor and unemployment within a growing system of automation. In this piece, two performers become the metaphor for mass production within these automated processes.

Modified and hacked machines - ranging from electrical equipment to sex toys - become prosthetic extensions of the performers’ bodies, and allow them to generate complex  rhythms and mechanical patterns through repetitive tasks and futile actions. However, the performers should beware: impressive as the creation of these complex rhythms through the use of mechanical instruments may seem, utmost precision and speed is required to keep up with the relentless pace of these motorized systems.
